What's that Lump on my Neck

You might be wondering what is a goiter. A goiter is the enlargement of the thyroid gland which leads to very large bumps in the front and sides of the neck. These large bumps are caused by the lack of iodine in a diet. Iodine is found in most food products in the U.S but it is still a significant problem around the world. Goiters are found in all age groups and races however, they are mostly in third world countries like India and Africa due to the lack of processed foods. They are also at a higher percentage of middle aged women. It is important that more people can be aware of this disorder before it becomes a problem and scars you for life. Before anyone gets worried about getting a goiter there are ways to prevent this from happening.

Some people believe that overweight people are the ones to contract a goiter, yes being overweight has been linked to having goiters but it can happen to anyone.  To prevent goiters there are things one can change in their life to not get one. Things such as smoking, lack of iodine, eating bad foods, and being pregnant have been linked to causing goiters. Some foods you may want to avoid are too many calciferous veggies like cauliflower and broccoli while pregnant. Although they are very nutritious they can cause goiters because it can block the uptake and absorption of iodine in ones diet. A simple goiter can occur without a known reason. It can occur when the thyroid gland is not able to make enough thyroid hormone to meet the body's needs. This can be due to a lack of iodine in a person's diet. To make up for the shortage of thyroid hormone, the thyroid gland grows larger.

There are a few warning signs to look for to alert you before a goiter develops. Some symptoms you may have before a goiter emerges  includes: coughing, high-pitched noisy breathing, popped out veins in the neck, and having a hard time swallowing.  (Talk about the what it looks like when it starts developing and maybe some additional complications from having a goiter.)

  • Toxic nodular goiter is an enlarged thyroid gland that has a small, rounded growth or many growths called nodules. One or more of these nodules produce too much thyroid hormone.
  • Simple goiters may occur in people who live in areas where the soil and water do not have enough iodine. People in these areas might not get enough iodine in their diet.
  • Certain medicines (lithium, amiodarone)
  • Infections
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Certain foods (soy, peanuts, vegetables in the broccoli and cabbage family)
  • Persons over age 40
  • People with a family history of goiter
  • Women
All people talk about these days is the danger of Ebola, high blood pressure and cancer. There are so many other diseases and disorders that are looked over because they are not as prevalent. Although goiters might be fun to say it's not funny and is a widespread problem that can easily be fixed if people paid more attention to the symptoms.

DRUG USE IS ABUSE (CODEINE)

www.wedorecover.com
Prescription drugs can cause negative effects such as addiction, tolerance, physical dependence, and even death. Anyone taking medication needs to be aware of these hazards, especially people that abuse prescription drugs. The problems related to codeine abuse have an effect world wide; therefore it is a problem that society cannot ignore.

What is codeine you may ask? Codeine is a sleep inducing and analgesic derived from morphine. Many studies say that codeine is only good for what it is prescribed for. Codeine is normally used to cure pain. Using large and frequent dosses of the pain-killer may actually produce heightened sensitivity to pain, without the same level of relief offered by morphine. Codeine use is not controlled in the same way as morphine and as it is the most widely used strong pain reliever medication in the world.

Although codeine is legal in the United States the FDA and DEA supervise its manufacturing because it is only legal with a prescription. When codeine is used without a prescription it is considered illegal because it is such an addictive drug. In 2013, the Chicago Tribune published an article about the negative effects of prescription codeine to children. the FDA stated "These children had evidence of being ultra-rapid metabolizers of codeine, which is an inherited ability
that causes the liver to convert codeine into life-threatening or fatal amounts of morphine in the body."

This is the way that it is effecting kids that are prescribed to it, so imagine the way that are effecting teens that are not prescribed and are just either getting it off of the street or using their loved ones prescribed. Young teens are buying drugs from off the street are taking them and abusing them. Codeine use is also leading to the abuse of heroin. The heroin rates are rising. Doctors say, "In the past decade the annual number of deaths in which some form of codeine has been implicated has almost tripled, from 46 in 2001 to 120 in 2012. That's not far short of the 154 deaths in 2011 caused by the opioid-like Tramadol, a prescription-only painkiller the Home Office is now looking at reclassifying as a Class C drug." (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2424740/Addicted-counter-opium-Few-realise-codeine-headache-pills-come-source-heroin--evidence-reveals-more-getting-hooked.html)

Despite its addictive nature, codeine is still  a weak enough opiate that it’s the most prescribed drug in the world. Codeine is the first opiate derivative that has been made an over the counter drug. that it’s the most prescribed drug in the world.

Codeine is included in most medications that are needed to relieve pain and also has been added to many cancer and HIV medication which shows that the millions if not billions of people in the world depend on the drug. Despite the abuse of the drug recreationally, codeine still has helped the world of science for pain relief drugs.

Codeine has been a very harsh drug destroying our community. They way it is used now compared to the way it was used back in the day is not good. You codeine for illegal things has not been right and never will. Please stop using drugs. DRUG USE IS ABUSE.

"Sipping Lean"

What do people even mean when they say they're "leaning." The official drug name for "lean" is actually promethazine. Most people know what promethazine is, but others don't. Promethazine is a drug, but it isn't a drug that you can just buy in Walgreens somewhere because it has to be prescribed from a doctor to a patient who is actually in need of the prescription. Promethazine is used to treat colds when people are sick and relieving certain allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny noses, itchy or watery eyes, and even skin rashes. Teens in this generation tend to attract to lean and drink it for pleasure. I interviewed a teen about his experience with lean, whose name will remain unknown, to learn more about why he drinks it. I'm not the type to tell people what they should and should not do because that doesn't help a person decide a correct route. However, promethazine is not the correct route to take unless it is prescribed, especially when you're taking too much at once.

Why Do Teens Use Lean?

Lean is no longer just a drug, it is now a culture. When people use lean, they tend to mix the promethazine into sprite and jolly ranchers. People have been drinking lean for the fun of it for a long time. Rapper, Lil Wayne, use to quote in his songs certain things about it,  making people more aware of how lean was being used. Although people were aware of it, it wasn't that popular within the teen community. It seems as though drinking lean for the fun of it just came out of nowhere for my generation. Some teens abuse promethazine because they enjoy it and they like how it makes them feel on the inside or even just because of the taste. I interviewed a young teen about his use of lean and he said "I put it in pop with some ice and I drink it because I like it. One day I was with my bros and they was pouring up and I'm like 'Dang bro what is that?' and they like 'Some act' and I'm like 'Well let me get a cup.' So I drank it and I got addicted after that."

Side Effects Of Lean

The teen said he was not aware of the side effects of lean nor does he care about them. Even though that may sound horrible, it's true. There are many teens in the world that are not aware of the side effects and sometimes they don't even care. According to a website called Drugs, there are many side effects of promethazine. However, it is known that nervous system side effects have been more frequent than other side effects. The nervous system side effects are listed below:
  • excessive sedation
  • drowsiness
  • fatigue
  • paradoxical excitation
  • confusion
  • disorientation
  • tremors
  • convulsive seizures
  • decreased motor coordination
Lean is very popular, although the facts behind it aren't entirely known. A person can't tell the next person not to do lean, but that person can be told that lean might not be the best route. Yeah it makes these teens feel good or relaxed, but there can also be consequences to drinking lean as well. For instance, Lil'Wayne and Rick Ross have abused lean and now have seizures do their drinking of lean. In addition, it even caused the eventual death of Pimp C which teens in my generation might don't even know about. Lean is not just pleasure, it can sometimes lead to pain. Learn more about lean!

Fighting is the Pits

http://www.chicagocaninerescue.com
The American-Pit Bull Terrier is the most misunderstood breed of dog. They are feared by many who know the tarnished reputation that they carry. Pit Bulls were bred in the 1800's by breeding together Bulldogs and Terriers to achieve a breed with certain desired traits such as strength and courage. Pit Bulls are members of the "Bully" breed. Bully breeds are a group of dogs that are part of the Bulldog bloodline.

The purpose of the Pit Bull Terrier was to help with herding livestock and hunting. Besides for those uses, people began using the breed for sporting. These sports were "Bull baiting" and "Rat baiting." Bull baiting consisted of letting the dogs attack bulls in hopes of restraining the bull to help with the slaughtering process. This sport was considered "inhumane" and became illegal in 1835. Then people starting using the dogs for "Rat baiting." This sport was similar to bull baiting except a Pit bull was placed in a pit full of rats, while the gamblers placed bets on how long it would take the dog to kill all of the rats. This sport was popular until the beginning of the 20th century where then it became illegal. Eventually, this is where the "dog fighting" sport came into play. The dogs were placed in a pit (hence the name "Pit" Bull.) to fight against each other.

http://pixgood.com/fawn-pitbull-cropped-ears.html
One of the most common believed myths about Pit Bulls are, "They are mean, and love to attack people." Fortunately, this is NOT the case at all. Pit Bulls are driven by a strong determination to make their owners happy and are willing to do anything to achieve their owner's happiness. There are many other myths that surround the name of this breed, but it is very important that before you believe the bull or discriminate, you need to educate yourself. Another common misconceived myth about these dogs is that, "They have the highest attack rate than any other dog, and the highest PSI bite force recorded among other dangerous breeds." Again, these are myths...and are not true. A lot of these statistics recorded are missing a numerous amount of accurate information and tend to sometimes be exaggerated. And as far as the PSI recorded for a Pit Bull, they have the lowest recorded bite force compared to the German Shepherd and Rottweiler scoring at 235 lbs.

This breed is very popular among headlines that are seen in today's news; a lot of them having a negative impact on the opinion of others. As a result, this makes the adoption of a Pit Bull more difficult. "  Thirty-five percent of shelters take in at least one pit bull a day, and in one out of four shelters, pits and pit mixes make up more than 20 percent of the shelter dog population." According to the ASPCA (www.aspcapro.org) Although this dog has a bad name, there are also amazing stories of how this breed have the power to save or change lives. By helping to challenge the negative opinions that many people have and shine light on the many positives that come from owning this particular breed, more people may want to adopt a Pit Bull. Any breed of dog has the potential to attack or kill without being a Pit-bull.  So before you decide to "shun" these creatures and succumb to the negative viewpoints of others, take time out of your day to visit a shelter and meet a Pit Bull, you might actually be surprised in what you find!

Cancer

http://ep.yimg.com/ay/decorativethings/breast-cancer-gifts-53.jpg
Reasons why I choose Breast Cancer is because my aunt has it and was fighting it i'm not sure how long but she fought it off to the end and never gave up on us nor herself, she was never negative about of what was going on with chemo, medicines she took, we all supported her 100% and I hope it doesn't come back, so I wanted to know how and what caused that too happen.

Facts of preventing it is;
1. Tobacco use is the cause of 22% of cancer deaths
2.Another 10% is due to obesity or a poor diet,
3. Lack of physical activity.
4. Drinking alcohol.
20% of cancers are usually due to infections such as hepatitis B, Nor hepatitis C.
You can prevent this from happening by not smoking, and eating more vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Also stay fit and healthy.
In 2012, about 165,000 children less than 15 we're diagnosed with cancer. The risk of cancer increases significantly with age and many cancers occur more commonly in developed countries.
Males are usually diagnosed with lung cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer,
also stomach cancer. Females mostly get diagnosed with breast cancer, colorectal, lung cancer and cervical cancer.

Breast cancer staging, is based on the size of the tumor, whether or not the tumor has spread to the size to the lymph nodes, in the armpits, depends if the tumor has metastasized.
Managing cancer;
Usually treated with surgery which may be followed by chemotherapy or radition therapy or even both depends.
Breast Cancer staging systems we're developed in the  1920s - 1930s.
The surgery involves the physical removal of the tumor typically along with some of the surrounding tissue.

The removal of the breast have different meanings like;
-Mastectomy, also means the removal of the whole breast.
-Quadrantectomy, is a removal of one quarter of the breast.
-lumpectory, removal of the small part of the breast.

Medication
Drugs used after and in addition to begin surgery are called adjuvant therapy.
There are three main groups of medication used for adjuvant breast cancer treatment.
-Normone, blocking agents
-Chemotherapy-Chemo  is used for cases of breast cancer in stages 2-4,usually for periods of 3-6 months.
-Monoclonal antibodies

Conclusion;
This sums up to how and what causes the cancer, and how the removal of the breast takes and all the medication, and chemo appointments you have to make, and changes your life completely and how much tears and fighting you have to go through and some lose there life's by cancer and some live through it everyday, like nothing's wrong, hiding the pain, make others happy when there not. Also how many young teens get diagnosed with cancer by not taking care of themselves or it just runs in there family. This is nothing to mess around with or joke about.

AeriMac

Hi, my name is Tatiana Jones. I am 15 years old. My birthday is February 2, 1999. I was born at Little Company Of Mary Hospital. I have one older sister and a younger brother and a  younger sister. I attend King College Prep High School. I am currently a sophomore will be graduating in the year of 2017. I plan to attend either  Georgia State University or Kennesaw State University. My favorite pass-time is dancing. I dance a lot because it releases all things that I have been through for the day, week, and month. Something I plan to do when I grow is becoming a nurse (particularly a DON). If that doesn't go as planned I plan on being a professional dancer. I am working my way to pursuing both careers.

My mother name is Latoya. She owns her own daycare. She is very hardworking and mellow. I like to talk about my mom because she is a very inspirational person. She has taught me a lot of things and life and will continue to help me prosper.

I am in this program because I would like to learn things about the body and other things about health science. I feel that this program will really benefit me financially and mentally. I plan to stay in this program for a long time.

Just Jordan

Bonjour! Je m'appelle Jordan. Some people like to call me Lil Jordan, or even Baby J. I am 15 years old, and I am a sophomore currently attending King College Prep. Jaguars! #2017!.... My grades starting off this current year are okay, they aren't my best, and I know I can do better, so that's what I'm striving for. I love the color blue, clothes, music, food, and mostly I LOVE MYSELF and the rapper Lil Durk I like making others laugh, and I like being around happy people, and I really hate when people come around me, and they complain about everything, or just change everyone's mood... Like UGHHHHHH! just get away from me if you do that, but other than that I am a very nice and lovable person, until you do the wrong thing to me. Let's talk about my future, I want to go to Clark University, or Spelman, I want to major in Medicine, and I wan to become a pediatrician.
I'm here because I do want to interact my life more with science, and as I am here I am learning more about science, and more new things pertaining  to health science. I do kind of like science now being in the program, and some things I can now relate to. I also came to this program to meet new people, and be able to open to a new group. Something that interests me is how everything is just brought out today, and how a lot of things I never heard of or was never thought about when I was younger, is now something popular today. For example the type of clothes people wear today I didn't think it would become a big deal about who is wearing what. Also things people do too, I feel like peer pressure is now becoming more and more effective today.

introduction a mi vida

Hi my name is  Gabe Pujol AKA  SE llama Papi Chulo. I like clothes, basketball, food, and science. A reason why I’m at this program is so I could do something productive with my time. Not only am I doing this program I am also playing basketball for Lake View High School. Another reason why I am enrolled in this program is because I've always liked science since a really young age. I've been in this program before and I feel like I could get more out of the second run then I did the first. I hope to learn more about science and make better friendships then the ones I make at school. Sometimes I make friends with kids that are not as in engaged in school then I am. I myself like something that will improve my knowledge in life and make me a stronger student. I first heard about this program from my mother who initially said I should be in this program. If I were not in this program I don't know what I would be doing with my time.

About Deja!

Hey! My name is Deja and I'm 15 years old. I'll be turning 16 on January 25th, 2015. I like for people to call me DMoney or DMula because I love money or in an other word mula. I love my instagram too! It's everything to me! Probably because I love to take pictures and that's all instagram is. I go to Gary Comer College Prep. I'm a straight A student with a 4.2 GPA. I take school very seriously because I want to make it somewhere in life. I want to attend University of Miami and major in business management. My plan A when I grow up is to be a cosmetologist and someday own my own shop. Another thing I want to do is work in finance. A lot of people say when they first see me they think that I'm just a pretty girl without smarts, but I always prove them wrong. I love to have fun and I'm a funny person. I LOVE TO PLAY ALL DAY! I'm not that much of a people person, but I am a nice person. I don't really like having a lot of friends--I keep my circle small. I have a boyfriend that I just adore. He's the best and even though we argue sometimes, we still maintain a healthy, happy relationship. Anyways, back to me I love money and shopping. Money is my best friend, and I love fashion! I'm here because I like to meet new people and see how different people are from each other. Also, I like to see how people attract to each other and how they get a long with one another. In my own opinion, I'm just AWESOME!

I plan on applying the knowledge from the program to my future career.
This program is very fun, in the past we have taken many enjoyable & educational trips. We took trips to places like the Shedd Aquarium, Chicago Cultural Center, & Northwestern downtown campus. We also had many scientists and doctors come talk to us about their wonderful careers and teach us about the relationship between the body and their job. I am really recommending this program to young teens that like to learn new things or like science.

Salvete Omnes!

Hello! My name is Ciara and I’m currently a freshman at Kenwood Academy High School. So far, freshman year is the absolute worst. The homework is also unnecessary. Since I was at Kenwood’s academic center, I’m taking all sophomore classes.  My birthday is on December 19, 1999, which makes me a Sagittarius. I’m 14-years-old, 5’2, have brown hair and brown eyes. I love my hair and enjoy styling it. I also enjoy polishing my nails. I love love love fashion. I love love love listening to music and have become obsessed with PARTYNEXTDOOR, SZA, Drake, Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky, and more. My favorite social media as of now is Snapchat because, unlike Instagram, it’s not about competition or how many likes you have. Plus, people act really goofy. I love love LOVE my iPhone, but I want the 5s. I don’t want the 6 or 6 plus because it looks way too much like the galaxy, which I don’t like very much. I’m an only child, so I’m bored most of the time. I love my friends to death, but they can be a headache. I’m the only one out of all my friends who isn’t in a dance program at After School Matters. I’m extremely talkative and outspoken when I’m at school, but need to take a break every once in a while. So, you can say I’m shy I guess. When I grow up, I want to be either a Cardiologist, Neurologist, Psychologist, Astronomer, Lawyer, Politician, Nurse, Medical Examiner, Journalist, or a Teacher. I love watching movies and I love popcorn. My favorite T.V. shows are Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, Castle, and Red Band Society. I love watching sports, but I have this love-hate relationship with basketball. I like it, but it's very aggravating. My favorite sport to watch, however, is football. And that's all you need to know about me for now. Bye! ;-).
