The Wonderful Life Of Kyla Simone
Hola! I am Kyla. I am a sophomore at Harlan Community Academy. Go falcons! I'm fifteen years old. I like to shop, party and do makeup. I like to have a lot of fun. I'm very goofy and talkative. I'm a really open person and I'm not shy at all. I smile all day and I'm very outgoing. My favorite thing to do is to listen to music. I listen to a lot of Tink, Dreezy, Chance The Rapper and Rich Homie Quan. My favorite song is Ran$ah-Triggas. My favorite color is neon pink and I wear something pink almost everyday. I have one older sister and two little brothers. Me and my sister are very close and she is one of the most important people in my life. My whole family is very close and we believe that their is nothing more important than family. I love going out with my friends and travelling with them.
I have big goals for my self. I want to attend Tennessee State University and major in nursing. After I complete my nursing degree I would like to join the United States Navy to show my appreciation to the many people who risk their lives to protect our country. I have always been interested in the Military because many people in my family have participated in the rigorous jobs required by the military. I strongly believe that the people who protect our country deserve the best care. While I'm in the navy I want to study neuroscience or bio-medical engineering. I decided to join the Health Science program because I think that it will help me learn about different health science topics that will be beneficial to my career as a nurse. Also I want to learn more about the human body and how it works. My health challenges also encouraged me to join the program.

Hi, my name is Tatiana Jones. I am 15 years old. My birthday is February 2, 1999. I was born at Little Company Of Mary Hospital. I have one older sister and a younger brother and a younger sister. I attend King College Prep High School. I am currently a sophomore will be graduating in the year of 2017. I plan to attend either Georgia State University or Kennesaw State University. My favorite pass-time is dancing. I dance a lot because it releases all things that I have been through for the day, week, and month. Something I plan to do when I grow is becoming a nurse (particularly a DON). If that doesn't go as planned I plan on being a professional dancer. I am working my way to pursuing both careers. My mother name is Latoya. She owns her own daycare. She is very hardworking and mellow. I like to talk about my mom because she is a very inspirational person. She has taught me a lot of things and life and will continue to help me prosper.
I am in this program because I would like to learn things about the body and other things about health science. I feel that this program will really benefit me financially and mentally. I plan to stay in this program for a long time.
Just Jordan
Bonjour! Je m'appelle Jordan. Some people like to call me Lil Jordan, or even Baby J. I am 15 years old, and I am a sophomore currently attending King College Prep. Jaguars! #2017!.... My grades starting off this current year are okay, they aren't my best, and I know I can do better, so that's what I'm striving for. I love the color blue, clothes, music, food, and mostly I LOVE MYSELF and the rapper Lil Durk I like making others laugh, and I like being around happy people, and I really hate when people come around me, and they complain about everything, or just change everyone's mood... Like UGHHHHHH! just get away from me if you do that, but other than that I am a very nice and lovable person, until you do the wrong thing to me. Let's talk about my future, I want to go to Clark University, or Spelman, I want to major in Medicine, and I wan to become a pediatrician.
I'm here because I do want to interact my life more with science, and as I am here I am learning more about science, and more new things pertaining to health science. I do kind of like science now being in the program, and some things I can now relate to. I also came to this program to meet new people, and be able to open to a new group. Something that interests me is how everything is just brought out today, and how a lot of things I never heard of or was never thought about when I was younger, is now something popular today. For example the type of clothes people wear today I didn't think it would become a big deal about who is wearing what. Also things people do too, I feel like peer pressure is now becoming more and more effective today.

introduction a mi vida
Hi my name is Gabe Pujol AKA SE llama Papi Chulo. I like clothes, basketball, food, and
science. A reason why I’m at this program is so I could do something productive
with my time. Not only am I doing this program I am also playing basketball for Lake View High School. Another reason why I am enrolled in this program is because I've always liked science since a really young age. I've been in this program before and I feel like I could get more out of the second run then I did the first. I hope to learn more about science and make better friendships then the ones I make at school. Sometimes I make friends with kids that are not as in engaged in school then I am. I myself like something that will improve my knowledge in life and make me a stronger student. I first heard about this program from my mother who initially said I should be in this program. If I were not in this program I don't know what I would be doing with my time.

About Deja!
Hey! My name is Deja and I'm 15 years old. I'll be turning 16 on January 25th, 2015. I like for people to call me DMoney or DMula because I love money or in an other word mula. I love my instagram too! It's everything to me! Probably because I love to take pictures and that's all instagram is. I go to Gary Comer College Prep. I'm a straight A student with a 4.2 GPA. I take school very seriously because I want to make it somewhere in life. I want to attend University of Miami and major in business management. My plan A when I grow up is to be a cosmetologist and someday own my own shop. Another thing I want to do is work in finance. A lot of people say when they first see me they think that I'm just a pretty girl without smarts, but I always prove them wrong. I love to have fun and I'm a funny person. I LOVE TO PLAY ALL DAY! I'm not that much of a people person, but I am a nice person. I don't really like having a lot of friends--I keep my circle small. I have a boyfriend that I just adore. He's the best and even though we argue sometimes, we still maintain a healthy, happy relationship. Anyways, back to me I love money and shopping. Money is my best friend, and I love fashion! I'm here because I like to meet new people and see how different people are from each other. Also, I like to see how people attract to each other and how they get a long with one another. In my own opinion, I'm just AWESOME!

Wonderful little lorren!!
Heyy wonderful people this is Lorren here! Also known as lil bit, lolo, lola, and lady bug. I am currently a Sophomore and a Emerald (dancing & flag) at Morgan Park High School. I am 15 years old. I enjoy dancing, singing, watching TV, shopping, hanging out with my friends, listening to music, making snacks, playing games, and helping people. If my friends were to describe me they would describe me as a sweet, short, small, funny, helpful, loud, inspirational, cool, talkative, helpful, open-minded, and brave person. I like to meet new people and try new things. I usually use social media daily to share ideas and post pictures of the wonderful moments and memories.
I have participated in many activities and clubs. So far in my life I took Ballet, Tap dancing, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Yearbook, Web coding, Karate, Science program, majorettes, flag . I am currently in the health science program because I like to investigate, learn new things outside of school and apply it to my work, and everyday situations. I really like this program because I learn about many things that is not talked about in school. I know more about the body system then what I knew before I entered the program. I plan on applying the knowledge from the program to my future career.
This program is very fun, in the past we have taken many enjoyable & educational trips. We took trips to places like the Shedd Aquarium, Chicago Cultural Center, & Northwestern downtown campus. We also had many scientists and doctors come talk to us about their wonderful careers and teach us about the relationship between the body and their job. I am really recommending this program to young teens that like to learn new things or like science.

Salvete Omnes!
Hello! My name is Ciara and I’m currently a freshman at Kenwood Academy High School. So far, freshman year is the absolute worst. The homework is also unnecessary. Since I was at Kenwood’s academic center, I’m taking all sophomore classes. My birthday is on December 19, 1999, which makes me a Sagittarius. I’m 14-years-old, 5’2, have brown hair and brown eyes. I love my hair and enjoy styling it. I also enjoy polishing my nails. I love love love fashion. I love love love listening to music and have become obsessed with PARTYNEXTDOOR, SZA, Drake, Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky, and more. My favorite social media as of now is Snapchat because, unlike Instagram, it’s not about competition or how many likes you have. Plus, people act really goofy. I love love LOVE my iPhone, but I want the 5s. I don’t want the 6 or 6 plus because it looks way too much like the galaxy, which I don’t like very much. I’m an only child, so I’m bored most of the time. I love my friends to death, but they can be a headache. I’m the only one out of all my friends who isn’t in a dance program at After School Matters. I’m extremely talkative and outspoken when I’m at school, but need to take a break every once in a while. So, you can say I’m shy I guess. When I grow up, I want to be either a Cardiologist, Neurologist, Psychologist, Astronomer, Lawyer, Politician, Nurse, Medical Examiner, Journalist, or a Teacher. I love watching movies and I love popcorn. My favorite T.V. shows are Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, Castle, and Red Band Society. I love watching sports, but I have this love-hate relationship with basketball. I like it, but it's very aggravating. My favorite sport to watch, however, is football. And that's all you need to know about me for now. Bye! ;-).It's Janeya!
I have a passion for health science, specifically mental health and epidemiology. Mental health is significant to me because I have more than one anxiety disorder. The most common types of anxiety come in the form of '-phobias', and I have social phobias and agoraphobia. This affects the way I am able to interact with other people and also how I react in certain situations. Often times mental health is taken for granted, however, on this blog it won't be. I hope to further my education within the health medical field. I'll be sharing blogs periodically, so please keep up with my posts. You'll have as much fun reading them as I do writing them!

Chey
currently a Junior at Taft High School on the Northside of Chicago. My reason for joining the Health Science Explorers program in ASM, was to broaden my intelligence in these two areas which I'm not really strong in. This program requires a lot of research and writing; two things I absolutely love doing not only academically, but leisurely as well. I am well known for my passionate love for Pit bulls; the most understood breed of dog that unfortunately carries a tarnished reputation. I am also known for liking August Alsina; a black music artist from New Orleans. I am also known for being a big fan of the sadly deceased Derek McAllister, a.k.a. Speaker Knockerz. I'm mixed with Black and Italian. I'm really nice person but I am also known to be very aggressive and loud. I love to laugh and spend time with my Best Friend Lexi. I am obsessed with tattoos and piercings...I absolutely adore jewelry and body art even though it is not very accepted today. I also represent gay pride!

Melanin Poem-Dmac
by Devonte M.
Melanin's not to be neglected
Your skin must always be protected
If you don't treat your skin right, then you'll regret it.
If you don't apply the sunscreen,
Then that would be a dumb thing,
But there are lots of benefits that the Sun brings.
It's all about moderation
Staying away from skin cancer's our obligation
For max skin health, you must have the proper patience.
Melanin is nature, it protects us from the rays
If we didn't have it, our bodies would be done today
We must eat the right foods and drink the right beverages
We gotta respect skin, not sever it.
If our color vanishes, then the person's gone
Skin disorders don't preserve the person's worth, it's gone.
The darker the skin, the less likely to get burned by the Sun
The Sun's great, we should not turn on the Sun.
The Sun gave us our color, and gave us health
It keeps us away from pain and hell.
No need to break our flesh
Tanning beds are fake, they bring hazards, see
They leave behind tragedies.
Your skin burns like meth, you burn to death
Those beds extremely hurt your health.
They lead to melanoma
Skin spots that grow are very dark like Dr.Pepper soda
It's not a rumor that this disease can give you lots of tumors
Melanin is beautiful,
Melting it is cruel to do.
But natural creams are helping us
If you have less color, you tend to have less life,
But that doesn't mean you have less fight
If you have more color, you have less light,
But that doesn't mean you have less might
We gotta use the medicine
That will help our skin to stay elegant.
We must make the best of our lives
Skin disease is hard to squash like deadly flies
Let's like our natural melanin types,
So we won't become sediments and die.
Let's stop Vitiligo from making our cells sick and die slow
It whitens your skin and messes your eyes, though
Albinism is a huge skin problem
It causes you to have vision problems
No wants to see the skin doctor
We gotta quickly solve these big problems.
If you don't let your skin shine,
Then your skin health won't incline.
Embrace your type
Or your skin will pay the price!

Visit From a Physical Therapist!
Earlier this summer the Health Science Explores were visited by a rather interesting physical therapist, Dr. Craig Hensley. When he first got into the lab room on the east side of the second floor, he showed us some facts about how to follow the path on becoming a physical therapist. What seemed to be a presentation that lasted a little under an hour turned out to be a experience changer and an eye opener to some of these teens. Within Dr. Hensley's presentation of the life of a PT (physical therapist), he told us about his adventures to Ghana and how this career field can work with the common Joe, war veterans, and babies to professional athletes.
Not only did he show us the fun of being a therapist, but the struggles of actually becoming a PT. On one of his slides there was a visual map of all the schooling he went through and HOLY COW, it was a lot! Dr. Hensley currently works at The University of Chicago Medicine and when he can, he likes to travel so he can help and teach people. By the end of his presentation he let us volunteer to try out his cool gadgets and learn some procedures for a common PT check-up. At the end of the day, all of us were left with a little more knowledge in our noggins.
Dr.Lara Pullen World's Greatest Stay At Home Mom
Dr.Lara Pullen (Doc) is a Medical Writer who loves science and believes that science is the way of thinking. Doc studied biology at Nothwestern University (downtown) and has a degree in Microbiology and a minor in Immunology. After working at the U.S Environmental Protection Agency Doc realized that she wanted to have a family and work in the comfort of her own home so she left her job at the EPA and became a Medical Writer which was inspired by her pregnancy. What's interesting about her job is she gets to fire her own bosses based on how much work they give her within a year and the type of work she is doing.
She told the students about her son which had a serious illness and how it could possibly lead to autism. Doc was determined to keep her son from getting autism so she studied hard ro help prevent her son from developing autism and wanted to help mothers around the world. She, along with her brother-in-law, created the largest Autism therapy website (www.healingthresholds.com). This website touched the lives of many because it was free. Doc tried her hardest to break it down to a sixth grade reading level for parents who knew very little English so they could be able to comprehend the different types of treatments.
Doc also spoke to us about her career as a medical writer. One of the students asked her "So how do you keep your readers interested in what your writing?" She walked out the classroom took a deep breath jumped back in and hit us with a big hook. She then told us a hook is what gets people interested. Dr. Pullen's visit was great for our program because she gave us a little more detail on how to write a paper for our blog and showed us how cool a stay-at-home mom's job really can be.
Taking Action For Your Health!
This is an excerpt from a journal response to the following prompt:
If you could change one thing about your community what would it be?
Something I would like to change is the food we consume. Our food is filled with chemicals and other things we do not know about, and we as humans need to stand up find out what is entering our bodies. I do not want my children growing up on this food like I am, so the we as citizens need to take action before our lives flash before our eyes, and the government needs to step up and not provide so many foods with such
things in them that affect our world!
