I have a passion for health science, specifically mental health and epidemiology. Mental health is significant to me because I have more than one anxiety disorder. The most common types of anxiety come in the form of '-phobias', and I have social phobias and agoraphobia. This affects the way I am able to interact with other people and also how I react in certain situations. Often times mental health is taken for granted, however, on this blog it won't be. I hope to further my education within the health medical field. I'll be sharing blogs periodically, so please keep up with my posts. You'll have as much fun reading them as I do writing them!
The Health Science Explorers are a group of teens that are taking the health world by storm, investigating the issues that matter most to them. While learning about their personal health they are also tackling how nutrition, disease, and socio-economics can affect their families and communities.

Mental Health Issues in Teens Part 2
by McKenzie L.
Anxiety disorders are the most common among children and adolescents. Anxiety disorders include phobias, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder, among others. These disorders all cause the young person to experience more than typical fear, worry, and anxiety. Phobias are a specific fear of one thing, and cause a variety of fear related symptoms in the person affected. Generalized anxiety disorder causes persistent worrying and anxiety about many things. A person with GAD may have restlessness, difficulty swallowing, hot flashes, nausea, light-headedness, and a variety of other physical manifestations of anxiety. Panic disorder is the suffering of sudden, unexpected, and uncontrollable panic attacks. The symptoms of a panic attack include sweating, shaking, shortness of breath, chest pain, nausea, feelings of loss of control, and chills. Obsessive compulsive disorder, or OCD, is a mental illness that causes persistent, intrusive, and unwanted images or impulses (obsessions) and repeated behaviors done to decrease anxiety from the obsessions (compulsions). OCD people are commonly obsessed with contamination, doubts, exactness and order, violence, and sex. Common compulsions include washing, checking, ordering, counting, repeating actions, and asking for reassurance. This disorder can be very disruptive to a person’s life style. Post traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, is a disorder brought on by a traumatic event. Victims of PTSD have vivid night terrors, intrusive flashbacks of the event, hypervigilance, and anxiety.

Eating disorders are most common among teenage girls. There are 3 main eating disorders: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. People with anorexia are so obsessed with being thin that they starve themselves. They refuse to eat and often have a very distorted body image, or believe themselves to be heavier than the really are. Bulimia is another disease that is caused by trying to prevent weight gain. Bulimic people go through episodes of binging and purging. They will eat a very large amount of food and then try to either throw it up or use laxatives to get rid of it. People with bulimia also have a distorted self image and low self esteem. Binge eating disorder is excessive eating without purging. People who have binge eating disorder eat to the point of physical pain, and often feel ashamed or guilty after they binge.

Developmental disorders are disorders that occur during childhood and persist through adulthood. These include autistic spectrum disorders, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and other learning disorders. The autistic spectrum is a spectrum of disorders that affect social interaction, communication, and behaviors. Autism is the main disorder within this spectrum, but Asperger’s, Fragile X, and other varying forms of autistic like diseases are also classified on the autistic spectrum. Adolescents with an autistic spectrum disease (ASD) are usually diagnosed at childhood, and tend to be behaviorally and mentally behind a few years. Learning is very difficult for people with an ASD, and therefore special accommodations within school are made. ADHD is increasingly common among children and adolescents. People with ADHD have difficulty concentrating, and can be hyperactive, depending on the manifestation of the disorder. There are a variety of other learning disorders, and all affect the adolescent or child’s development into adulthood by hindering learning.
Behavioral disorders are often undiagnosed. They affect a person’s behavior, and can get them in a good deal of trouble. Many prison inmates are estimated to have a behavioral disorder. These disorders include oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder. Both of these disorders can cause an adolescent to disrespect authority and “talk back”. Behavioral disorders aren’t dangerous, but they often make life very difficult for the person who has them.
There are many different kinds of mental disorders. It is extremely important for people to be educated about the things that affect adolescents in the world today. In order for us to sympathize and connect with people on a personal level, we need to understand what they’re going through. If the world is aware of the true nature of mental illness, discrimination against those with mental disorders will end. Awareness is easy; talk to people about mental illness. Together, we can make the world a smarter, better place.

Psychotic disorders are not as typical in teens, but they do exist. Schizophrenia shows itself in late adolescence/early adulthood. It distorts the way one sees the world and often makes it difficult to distinguish reality from the delusions brought on by the disorder. Hallucinations are associated with schizophrenia. Auditory hallucinations are most common, and consist of voices commanding one to do something, discussing between each other, or narrating one’s thoughts aloud.
Personality disorders can be unnerving. This classification includes disorders that affect the personality of the adolescent in question. Antisocial personality disorder is classified as a personality disorder. Symptoms include disregard for right and wrong, manipulation, consistent abuse and neglect of pets or children, and lack of empathy. People with antisocial personality disorder often do not work well with others. If one has narcissistic personality disorder, they have an inflated sense of self importance and strong desire for the admiration of others. This disorder doesn’t set in until early adulthood, so adolescents are not typically affected by it. Another disorder is schizoid personality disorder. The behaviors associated with schizoid can become noticeable during childhood. It is on the schizophrenic spectrum of disorders, but people with schizoid disorder are very much in touch with reality. They strongly value independence and have trouble connecting with others socially. Schizotypal personality disorder is also on the schizophrenic spectrum. It usually becomes evident during adolescence, and consists of brief psychotic episodes, eccentric behavior, social anxiety, and belief in special powers. Schizotypal personality disorder is not as severe or dangerous as schizophrenia. Borderline personality disorder is one of the most well known personality disorders. BPD often begins during adolescence or early adulthood. Symptoms include extreme reactions to real or perceived abandonment, a warped sense of self identity, impulsive and reckless behavior, and suicidal thoughts and/or tendencies. Because many of these symptoms can be mistaken for other disorders, borderline personality disorder often goes misdiagnosed.

Sleep Paralysis (original poem)
by Jenna G.
The Boogieman, a clown, a vicious dog, werewolf, or hound.
Holding you at the throat
Or simply sitting at the edge of your bed.
It must be scary to wake up to something like that.
Or are you still dreaming?
You can't move,
Only your eyes wander
You struggle to get up,
And struggle to scream.
No one can hear your faint cries,
Because they are less than whispers.
But once that clown has you by the neck
You just lie there,
Letting them kill you.
But as you feel like your life is fading,
Your heart begins beating
Your fingers begin twitching
Your toes begin wiggling
The clown and scary monsters begin to fade away,
And you have a panic attck.
The next night you can't sleep
Insomnia
Your heart beats faster when the lights are out.
Anxienty
But when you begin to drift into a dream,
It's a whole new nightmare.

Anxiety (original poem)
by Melanie R.
She cannot control it.
It's a monster inside of her.
She lies there at two in the morning
thinking back at what she's done
All of those embarrassing things
She just can't get over them.
They might be small, but they can really make her hate herself
For making a stupid move.
It eats her up,
It consumes her insides.
And before she knows it
it follows her around though the day.
It's a monster.
Standing in front of people
Her voice cracks
Her hands start to shake.
It's the things that don't matter.
But it keeps her from sleeping.
She can't do anything but sob
even at two in the morning
It's a monster
and it keeps finding her.
